Spartacus is about the historical figure of Spartacus, a Thracian gladiator who from 73 to 71 BC led a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic. However, the TV show is not a boring history lesson, nor is it just about clashy sword fights, naked oily bodies, and twisted politics.
Spartacus shakes the modern concept of morality and belief in the goodness of human nature. It cuts deep with the slave’s sword into rotten hearts of free lawful citizens and rulers of Rome. As a philosopher myself, I can only marvel at how Spartacus takes some of Nietzsche’s thoughts back where they belong and manifest, back to the actual source and inspiration of his nihilistic philosophy. It’s the time before Christianity, idealized omniscient God, before pity, and before the dumbed-down 10 commandments. It’s Spartacus and the true Roman way of life.
